Council tax basics for new movers

What council tax is based on, what you can claim, and when a challenge is worth it.

How your bill is calculated

Your property sits in a band (A to H in England) based on its estimated value on a fixed historic date, not today's market price. Your council sets the rate for each band each year.

Discounts you may be entitled to

Several reductions are easy to miss.

  • 25% single person discount if you are the only adult in the property.
  • Full exemption for households where everyone is a full-time student.
  • Reductions for people with severe mental impairment, and for annexes.
  • Council Tax Reduction if you are on a low income or certain benefits.

Challenging your band

If similar neighbouring properties are in a lower band, you can ask the Valuation Office Agency to review yours. Be aware the review can move your band up as well as down, so compare carefully first.

When you move

Tell both your old and new council within a few weeks. Late notification is a common cause of duplicate bills and recovery notices.
