PIP review form: how to prepare and what to send

If you get Personal Independence Payment (PIP), DWP reviews your award from time to time. The review starts with a form asking how your condition affects you now.

What the review is

An award review checks whether you still qualify and at what rate. Your award could stay the same, go up, go down or stop. The form is often called the AR1 ('award review') form.

Return it by the date given

The letter with the form gives a deadline. If you need more time, contact the PIP enquiry line before the deadline and ask. Not returning the form can lead to your payments stopping.

Answering the questions

  • Describe how your condition affects you on a typical day and on bad days.
  • Say what help you need, how often, and how long tasks take.
  • Mention anything that has changed since your last assessment, better or worse.
  • Avoid simply writing 'no change' — explain your current situation.

Evidence that helps

Recent letters from health professionals, care plans, prescription lists and statements from carers or family can all help. Send copies, not originals, and write your name and National Insurance number on each page.

After the decision

If you disagree with the outcome, you can ask for a mandatory reconsideration within one month of the decision letter.
