How to read an HMRC letter without panicking

HMRC letters are written for HMRC, not for you. Here is how to find what matters in under two minutes.

Start with the three things that matter

Almost every HMRC letter can be reduced to three questions: what is this about, how much is involved, and by when do I need to do something.

  • The reference number — usually top right. Quote it in every reply.
  • The amount — check whether it is owed, refunded, or only an estimate.
  • The deadline — look for phrases like 'within 30 days' as well as explicit dates.

Work out what type of letter it is

A tax calculation (P800), a simple assessment, a penalty notice and a compliance check all need very different responses. The letter type is normally printed near the top or in the first line.

Check it before you pay

HMRC calculations can be based on out-of-date employment or income figures. Compare the figures with your payslips, P60 or self-assessment before paying anything, and contact HMRC if they do not match.

Watch for scams

HMRC will never ask for payment by gift card or bank transfer over the phone. If a letter or text pushes urgency and an unusual payment method, verify it through your HMRC online account first.
